SuperSnake: play the snake game online for free
SuperSnake is the classic snake game with one twist: there is no grid and no fixed speed.
The snake's head goes exactly where you point, as fast as you move. Eat the coloured dots to grow,
keep clear of the walls and your own tail, and try to beat your best score.
You can play snake online for free right here, with no download and no sign-up. It runs in your
browser on a PC, Mac, Chromebook, phone or tablet: steer with the mouse or touchpad, the arrow
keys, or the joystick that appears on mobile.
How to play the snake game
- Pick a mode in the bar above the board: Infinite, or a 15, 30 or 60 second
sprint. Tap Best there to see your best score in every mode.
- Press Start game. The snake's head appears where your pointer is, or in the
middle of the board on a touch screen.
- Eat the dots. Each dot is worth one point and adds one segment to your tail,
in the dot's colour. A new dot appears somewhere else straight away.
- Don't crash. The game ends when the head touches an edge of the board or
your own body, or when the clock runs out in a timed mode.
When you beat your best score the score box lights up, and the new record is saved when the game
ends. The glow around the board always takes the colour of your newest tail segment, so a long
game paints the whole page.
Snake game controls: mouse, keyboard and touch
Mouse or touchpad
Move the pointer over the board and the head follows it. Move slowly to thread through
tight gaps. A very fast flick can even carry the head across your own body, because the
game checks for a crash once per frame.
Phone and tablet
A joystick sits under the board. Push it the way you want to go: a small push creeps,
a full push dashes, and letting go stops the snake where it is. The board takes the shape
that fits your screen, tall when you hold the phone upright and wide when you turn it
sideways, with the same amount of room to play either way. The page won't scroll while
you steer, and End finishes a game early.
Keyboard
Tab to Start game and press Enter, then hold the arrow keys or W, A, S and D. Hold two
keys at once to move diagonally. Esc ends the game at any time.
Snake game modes
- Infinite
- No clock. Play at your own pace until you crash, and see how long your snake can get.
- 15 seconds
- A quick sprint. Go straight for each dot; there is no time to plan a pretty path.
- 30 seconds
- Long enough for your tail to start getting in the way, short enough to replay again and
again.
- 60 seconds
- A full minute of chasing. Pace yourself so a late crash doesn't cost you the run.
A bar above the board shows the time left in timed modes. Every mode keeps its own best score,
so you can compete with yourself (or a friend on the same device) in all four.
Snake game tips for a higher score
- Keep the head near the middle of the board, where you always have room to turn.
- Move in wide loops rather than sharp turns, so your tail stays out of your path.
- Look at the next dot before you reach the current one, and plan the route there.
- On a phone, use small pushes on the joystick near walls and full pushes in open space.
- In timed modes, speed matters more than tidiness: take the straight line.
Music and sound
Background music is off until you turn it on: open the music menu (the note at the top of the
page) and press Play music. The same menu lets you pick one of four tracks and set the music and
sound effect volumes separately. Your choices are remembered for next time.
Snake game FAQ
How do you play SuperSnake?
Press Start game, then move your mouse over the board. The snake's head follows the
pointer. Eat the coloured dots to score a point and grow one segment each, and keep away
from the edges of the board and from your own body.
Is this the classic snake game?
The goal is the same as in the classic snake game: eat, grow and don't crash into the
walls or yourself. The difference is how you steer. Classic snake moves square by square
at a fixed speed and you only choose the direction; in SuperSnake the head follows your
pointer, keys or joystick smoothly, so you decide the speed too.
Can I play SuperSnake on a phone or tablet?
Yes. On a touch screen a joystick appears under the board. Push it the way you want to go:
a small push moves the snake slowly, a full push moves it fast, and letting go stops it.
The board takes the shape of your screen, upright or sideways. Tap End to finish a game
early.
Can I play with a keyboard?
Yes. Press Enter on Start game, then hold the arrow keys or W, A, S and D to steer. Hold
two keys to move diagonally. Press Esc to end the game.
What game modes are there?
Four: Infinite has no clock and runs until you crash, while the 15, 30 and 60 second modes
ask you to eat as many dots as you can before the timer runs out. Each mode keeps its own
best score.
Where is my best score saved?
In your browser on this device. There is no account, so clearing this site's data or
switching to another browser starts your best scores again from zero.
Why did my snake pass through its own body?
The game checks for a crash where the head is on each frame. Move the mouse fast enough and
the head jumps over a segment between two frames, so it crosses without touching. It is a
handy escape, but hard to control.
Is SuperSnake free, and do I need to install anything?
It is free and runs in your browser, with nothing to download and no sign-up.
